CONVICTED MURDERER PURSUES APPEAL CASE
The Court of Appeal has begun hearing
a second appeal by Sara Thornton,
jailed for life in 1990 for murdering
her husband wUth a kUtchen knife.
The 38-year-old had her original appeal
rejected in 1991 when judges refused to
quash her conviction or reduce it to
manslaughter on grounds of provocation.
The court ruled that despite claims of
sustained violence by her husband there
had been no "sudden and temporary loss
of self-control" by Mrs Thornton.
Women's rights groups regard the appeal
as a test case. See Despatch 192
