 ■ NEW HOPE FOR MS SUFFERERS            

                                        

 A new drug on trial may be able to slow

 the progress of the crippling disease  

 multiple sclerosis, which affects      

 60,000 people in the UK.               

                                        

 Studies conducted into interferon beta 

 have been encouraging, but the drug's  

 long-term effects are not known.       

                                        

 Patients who were given high doses of  

 the drug had a lower relapse rate and  

 fewer abnormalities when scanned. The  

 effects were maintained for three years
