       DOW JONES INDUSTRIAL INDEX       

        at CLOSE 3,939.07 +6.39         

                                        

 Stocks showed modest gains in a slow   

 session despite a drop in bond prices  

 tied to a report on US inflation.      

                                        

 Advances outnumbered declines by 4 to 3

 on the New York Stock Exchange, with   

 1,233 up, 929 down and 767 unchanged.  

                                        

 The volume was 295.55m shares against  

 325.55m in the last session. The NYSE's

 composite index rose 0.59 to 261.80.
