■ WORLD WAR II BATTLESHIP POLLUTION
The battleship Royal Oak, sunk by a
German U-boat in 1939 in the Scapa
Flow in the Orkneys, is threatening to
pollute the area with oil.
It was carrying 3,500 tonnes of diesel
fuel when it sank, and corrosion of its
hull means that there are now fears
of a major oil spill.
Scapa Flow is home to seals. Sea
duck, fish and whales are also
regular visitors to the area.
