 Anatoly Karpov, the reigning FIDE world

 champion, looked in trouble throughout 

 his 45 move third game defeat by Boris 

 Gelfand, playing Black in a Caro-Kann. 

                                        

 Gelfand deviated from game one on move 

 eight. Karpov returned his pawn sac on 

 move 16 in a futile attempt to relieve 

 the pressure, but caved in on move 26. 

                                        

 By move 30, Karpov was already lost. He

 had one minute left to make ten moves, 

 and though he made time control, could 

 not stop Gelfand's threats of promotion
