 You have already seen examples of a    

 defender showing whether he has an even

 or odd number cards in a suit. Here    

 East cannot imagine that a normal      

 attitude signal could be of any use, so

 he should show count.                  

                                        

 A high heart at Trick 1 (eg the H9)    

 should show an even number of hearts,  

 making it safe to cash the HQ.         

 Conversely, a low heart (say, H2)      

 should show an odd number (probably    

 five) so West should switch to the D3.
