 MMC TO PROBE NORTHUMBRIAN BID          

                                        

 The proposed takeover of Northumbrian  

 Water by France's Lyonnaise des Eaux is

 to be investigated by the Monopolies   

 and Mergers Commission.                

                                        

 Trade president Michael Heseltine      

 ordered the inquiry on the advice of   

 the Office of Faiu Trading.            

                                        

 Lyonnaise des Eaux, which already owns 

 North East Water and Essex and Suffolk 

 Water, announced the bid on March 6.
