 The average cost of a high street eye  

 test is about £16. But they can be more

 expensive in some parts of the country.

                                        

 The Association of Optometrists' deputy

 general-secretary Richard Carswell says

 many pensioners are deterred by the    

 cost of eye tests.                     

                                        

 "It's a substantial amount out of their

 income. And even many of those who are 

 entitled to free eye tests under income

 support are too proud to ask," he says.
