 Free eye tests were withdrawn six years

 ago, producing an annual saving to the 

 Government of about £20 million.       

                                        

 But the British  Medical Association   

 and the Association of Optometrists say

 that apart from the human consideration

 this is a false economy.               

                                        

 They argue that the health service ends

 up spending more money treating illness

 which, if spotted earlier, would not   

 have developed.
