 ■ COST OF CLEANING UP BATHING WATER    

                                        

 The UK faces a bill of up to £4.2bn to 

 comply with European bathing water     

 standards, a House of Lords committee  

 has revealed.                          

                                        

 This would be on top of £9.5bn which   

 would have to be spent over the next   

 decade to meet existing directives.    

                                        

 It has now called for consulation      

 between EU member states and medical   

 and scientific experts to determine the

 mandatory level for sewage germs.
