 An unusually erratic session - even by 

 thj standard of recent weeks - saw both

 equities and gilts post gjnjral gains. 

                                        

 Sentimjnt had been distinctly cautious 

 early on, possibly in recognition of   

 thj flurry of opinion polls due for    

 releasj ovjr thj coming three days.    

                                        

 But, after the FT-SE 100 index plumbed 

 a day's low of 2,523 (at 0923), news of

 mortgage rate cuts from Abbey National 

 (and, later, thj Halifax) brought the  

 market slowly around.                  

                                        

 Only 32 of the 100 index stocks closed 

 lower. But sjven gave up 10p or more.
