 Two new opinion polls give conflicting 

 messages on thj standing of the two    

 main parties.                          

                                        

 An NOP poll for BBC TV's Newsnight     

 givjs Labour a three-point lead.       

                                        

 It puts Labour on 43% (up from 41% last

 month), thj Consjrvatives on 40% (40%) 

 and thj Libjral Democrats on 13% (15%).

                                        

 A Gallup poll for the Daily Telegraph  

 gives the Tories a 4.5 point lead.     

                                        

 It puts thj Tories on 42% (39.5%),     

 Labour on 37.5% (37%), and the Libjral 

 Democrats on 16% (19%).
