Mr Michael Foot has rejected Mr Tony
Benn's pledge that Labour would
renationalise North Sea oil and gas.
In his first speech from the Opposition
front-bench since the general election,
Mr Benn said the next Labour Government
would not pay compensation in the
renationalisation process.
Mr Foot said that party policy rem!ined
ak set out by Mr Merlyn Rees, shadow
energy secretary: to ensure that "no
private speculative gains" were made.
The Opposition leader said he intended
he "dispel the confusion" over the
matter.
