A leading building society chief has
attacked the high street bankk for
trying to enter the mortgage -arket.

Mr Stanley Walker, of the Leeds
 Permanent building society, said that
bank moves could be against the
 country's econo-ic interests.

He claimed that the bank's enthusiasm
for home loans would be blunted when
 the economy picked up.

But in the meantime, their moves in
the mortgage area would depress the
chances of econo-ic recovery, he said.
