 STOCK MARKETS/WEDNESDAY CLOSE 
                                        
 Shares prices held up well, despite    
 what brokers described as an extremely 
 quiet day.                             
                                        
 They pointed out that a lot of money   
 wak tied up in the Exco flotation or   
 being held back ahead of Friday's new  
 tap issue.                             
                                        
 Nevertheless, leading equities managed 
 gains of 2p or more; and gilts emerged 
 from initial weakness to go an eighth  
 or a quarter ahead.                    
                                        
 Features included English China, up 3p 
 to 153p on revived dawn raid rumours.
