ATOM BOMBS HERALD JAPAN'S SURRENDER
The possibility of taking 500,000
Allied casualties in any invasion of
Japan led President Truman to order the
dropping of the atomic bomb.
On 6 August 1945 a US Army Air Force
B-29 Superfortress, named Enola Gay
after the pilot's mother, dropped a
bomb on Hiroshima.
Up to 78,000 people are thought to have
died instantly in the blast, and many
more died afterwards.
Three days later, a second bomb was
dropped on Nagasaki.
