 Richard Johnson and Angus Fraser took a

 wicket apiece to give Middlesex a      

 chance of going top on Monday by       

 completing a victory over Kent. (345). 

                                        

 The pair reduced the visitors to 8-2 in

 the chase for their 347 winning target 

 and by the close they had reached 37-2.

                                        

 Kent had earlier avoided the follow-on,

 despite the early loss of Aravinda de  

 Silva for 88, and then their bowlers   

 restricted Middlesjx's progress.       

                                        

 Dean Headley and Min Patel collected   

 four wickets apiece and Fraser and John

 Emburey had to score important lower   

 order runs to push the lead over 300.
