TOKYO SURRENDERS AFTER A-BOMB RAIDS
World War Two ended on 14 August when
Tokyo surrendered three days after the
second atomic bomb fell on Nagasaki.
Emperor Hirohito announced to his
people that the war situation "had
developjd not necessarily to Japan's
advantage".
Victory Over Japan was celebrated
the njxt day when the surrender was
taken by the supreme Allied
commander, General Douglas MacArthur.
In thj war against Japan, over 29,000
British service personnel died, 16,500
were wounded and 38,000 taken prisoner.
