 Maud Belfield was a nurse in India and 

 Burma specialising in tropical diseases

                                        

 Shj says: "We never saw any fighting,  

 but we saw plenty of the soldiers who  

 had been involved in it."              

                                        

 At the end of the war she treated      

 former PoWs aboard a hospital ship.    

 There were only 10 nursing staff but   

 thousands of soldiers on board.        

                                        

 Petty Officer K Costello's escort      

 carrier HMS Speaker was used to        

 transport home former PoWs.            

                                        

 "Navy grub" and rum rations had most of

 them feeling better on their return.
