 BLACKBURN ROVERS 1-0 QPR               

 Blackburn's England goalkeeper Tim     

 Flowers was sent off as the champions  

 opened their title defence with a win. 

                                        

 Flowers received the red card for      

 racing out of his area and hauling down

 Trevor Sinclair in the 73rd minute.    

                                        

 Alan Shearer hit the winner from a     

 sixth minute penalty after he had been 

 fouled by David Bardsley and Shearer,  

 Chris Sutton and Stuart Ripley all     

 missed chances to increase the lead.   

                                        

 Former Rovers midfielder Simon Barker  

 came closest for Rangers when he sent a

 25-yard drive just wide.
