FIERCE FIGHTING AS ALLIES ADVANCE
Allied bombers launched almost
continuous attacks against the
Japanese homeland between May and
August 1945.
Japan had lost her air superiority, but
her ground troops still fought intense
and bitter battles to try to slow the
Allied advance.
Many islands, such as Iwo Jima and
Okinawa, were only captured when
virtually the last Japanese was dead.
But neither her soldiers' fear of
capture nor fanaticism could save
Japan's imperialist ambitions.
