 NEWCASTLE 3-0 COVENTRY                 

 Newcastle got the winning start they   

 wanted but it was never easy against a 

 determined Coventry.                   

                                        

 Until the 82nd minute United had only  

 Robert Lee's seventh-minute goal to    

 show for their possession and some     

 superb attacking football.             

                                        

 Peter Beardsley was brought down in the

 box by Paul Williams and he picked     

 himself up to score from the spot.     

                                        

 A minute later Newcastle's £6 million  

 record signing Les Ferdinand was sent  

 clear and he slotted the ball home.
