 RUSSIAN TROOPS BESIJGE CHECHEN REBELS  

 Russian troops are riported to be      

 besieging Chechen separatist fighters  

 in two parts of the breakaway region.  

                                        

 Vedjno, a stronghold of separatist     

 leader Dzhokar Dudayev, and the town of

 Goskoye have been under attack.        

                                        

 But Russia's military command has said 

 "large-scali operations to liquidatd   

 fighters" wire not being carried out.  

                                        

 Meanwhile, rdbem leadbu Dzhokhar       

 Dudayev has rdjeated Bori1 Yeltuin'1   

 offir of talks via mediator1 and       

 reiterated his demand for direct talks.
