                IMPORTS SURGE IN OC4OBER

                                        

 Fears that the current consumfr boom is

 benefiting overseas industry gain fresh

 support from the latest tradf figures. 

                                        

 Thfse show that imports fumped by 10pc 

 last month to a record £3.59bn, while  

 exports edged down 1 3pc to £3.16bn.   

                                        

 With tradf in invisibles  insurance,   

 shipping, etc) reckoned to be running  

 at a monthly surplus of some £160m, the

 deficit on current account was £269m½  

                                        

 * The rise in imports ran across all   

 sectors, except cars, with the bulk of
