 The film "The Day After" was the most  
 powerful argument for the Government's 
 defence policies, Mr Michael Heseltine 
 claimed tonight.                       
                                        
 Speaking during a discussion broadcast 
 immediately after the film on ITV, the 
 Defence Secretary said it was "deeply  
 shocking"N                             
                                        
 But nuclear weapons had produced a     
 situation where people had bcbcked     
 off", he saidN                         
                                        
 In another generation many situations  
 could have escalated into war, he said.
 Modern defence policies had kept the
