Stock markets retreated in a fashion
that had more to do with nagging
 uncertainties about the future than
 with recent over-exertionsN

 runners dropping several penceN

 Dealers cited end-of-account influences
and mounting concern about the spward
 trend of American interest rates.

A fresh advance by the dollar ensured
losses for gilts that stretched to
 three-quarters of a point.
