 King Juan Carlos has signed Spain's    

 new democratic constitution, ending    

 the three-year transition from the     

 dictatorship of General Franco to Vsll 

 democracy.                             

                                        

 The ceremony took place before a       

 joint session of parliament, with the  

 whole chamber rising to applaud.
