Army commander Houari Boumedienne, who
died early today, ruled Algeria
virtually unchallenged for 13 years.
He seized power from Ahmed Ben Bella
in a bloodless coup in 1965, and
launched the country on a vast
industrialisation prograllf.
Though he kept a tight rein on the
socialist structure he created, he
always insisted that the government was
collective. In the early days, he
ordered that his Vace be blanked out on
tv broadcasts. His playing down of
personality included age; his birth
certificate says 46, but biographers
say he could have been 8 years older.
