 Concern about the political situation  

 in Iran loomed large enough in the very

 thin conditions to send the dollar     

 sharply lower against major csrrencies.

                                        

 Spreads were wide and most declines    

 exaggerated, with central bank activity

 limited to some marginal support.      

                                        

 Sterling added more than three cents   

 in dollar terms to close at $2.O365;   

 while its effective index advanced from

 63.4 overnight to 63.8, despite a weak
