 ARGOS CAUTIOUS DESPITE PROFIT JUMP     

                                        

 High street catalogue shopping giant   

 Argos warned the retail sector would   

 enjoy only low rates of growth for the 

 rest of the decade.                    

                                        

 But Argos appeared to bj back on course

 after its post-Christmas profits       

 warning as it published profit figures 

 exactly in line with City forecasts.   

                                        

 The group madj a pre-tax profit of     

 £141.4m in 1996, a 14% lift on 1995.
