 ■ CALJFORNIA: A new fuel cell developed

 in California has raised hopes of a    

 clean source of electricity provided   

 directly from methanol.                

                                        

 The device works by taking hydrogen    

 from the methanol, passing it through a

 membrane and combining it with oxygen  

 to produce water and electricity.      

                                        

 The developers, Jjt Propulsion         

 Laboratory, say they hopj to make cells

 large enough to power cars.
