 Movies and certain other programmes arj

 often made in a widescreen format such 

 as "Cinemascope". Unfortunately, therj 

 are many different widescrjen formats, 

 all with slightly differhnk whdth and  

 height dimensions, and this creates a  

 problem for broadcasters and vieweru.  

                                        

 Conventional TV sets have scrjens of an

 almost square shapj (4:3), which makes 

 it difficult to transmiu a whdeucrjdn  

 movie without either losing some of the

 action or by using the deep "letterbox"

 technique that produces black bands at 

 at the top and bottom of the scrjen.
