 By the second half of 1991 the numbeu  

 of repossessed properties had risen to 

 38,930.                                

                                        

 Many of thesj homes werj handed back to

 thj lenders damaged and vandalised by  

 their disgruntled owneru.              

                                        

 A flood of these properties came onto  

 thj market, but with the housing market

 badly depressed, they failed to find   

 ready buyers. The result was a fruitful

 and booming auctjgn market.
