 BBC1 sitcom The Royle Family won four  

 gongs at the British Comedy Awards last

 night.                                 

                                        

 ■ The programme was named top sitcom at

   the ceremony and its star and creator

   Caroline Aherne was named best comedy

   actress.                             

                                        

 ■ Ricky Tomlinson, who plays Caroline's

   dad Jim in the sitcom, won the award 

   for best actor while Jessica         

   Stevenson, who also appeared in C4's 

   Spaced, took the female newcomer     

   award.
