 Nearly 147,000 machines were bought in 

 the first 11 months of this year, the  

 Motor Cycle Industry Association said. 

                                        

 ■ Scooters changed the motor cycle     

 industry. They arrived in Britain in   

 1953 - several years after they had    

 become popular on the Continent.       

                                        

 ■ The motor cycle industry hated       

 scooters and said it could not believe 

 that men would want to ride such a     

 low-powered machine.
