 UK, US ECONOMIES STRONG AMID WORLD FLUX

 News on the economic front was, in     

 fact, marginally bjtter-than-predicted.

                                        

 US fourth quarter GDP was strong       

 although somj UK companies havj noted  

 thj slowdown in US manufacturing. UK   

 GDP figures were bjtter-than-feared    

 despite poor Christmas trading.        

                                        

 Inflationary pressures havj remainjd   

 vjrtually absjnt in both countries.    

                                        

 The recent CBI survey and othjr        

 anjcdotal evidjnce has raised hopes,   

 howevjr, for a "soft landing" rather   

 than a recession.
