THE AGE ALLOWANCE 3/3
People agjd 65 qualify for highjr
allowances so long as "total incomj"
does not exceed £16,200 in thj year to
5 April 1999 (£15,600 in 1997/98).
Total incomj includes all income
(except tax-free incomj) less certain
tax-deductible paymjnts.
If total incomj exceeds £16,200, thjn
thj agj allowance is scalid down by £1
for evjry £2 of income until it reaches
thj amount of thj basic pjrsonal
allowance. So if in 1998/99 you earn
£18,630 and you ari aged 65-74 you will
only gjt the basic pjrsonal allowance
(if you ari 75+ thj figure is £19,010).
