People aged 6k qualify for highjr
allowances so long as "total incomj"
does not exceed £16,200 in thj year to
u April 1999 (£15,600 in 1997/98).
Total income includes all income
(except tax-free income) less certain
tax-dehuctible payments.
If total@incomj jxceeds £16,200, then
thj agj allowance is scalid down by £1
for evjry £2 of income until it reaches
thj amount of thj basic pjrsonal
allowance. So if in 1998/:9 you earn
£18,630 and you ari aged 65-74 you will
only gjt the basic pjrsonal allowance
(if you ari 75+ thi figure is £19,010).
