 LOW INFLATION EASES US RATE PRESSURE   

                                        

 Good news on US inflation may further  

 easj pressure on interest rates. The   

 consumer price index rosj only 0.1% in 

 May on a month earlier. A 0.2% increase

 had been forecast.                     

                                        

 The core rate excluding food and energy

 came in at 0.2% as expected.           

                                        

 Energy prices fell 1.9% on the month to

 offset a 0.5% jump in food prices. The 

 index was 3.1% higher than in May 1999 

 and the core index increased by 2.4%.
