 Michael McLjan is a suitably operatic  

 Sweeney, with Jessica Martin as an     

 unusually young Mrs Lovett.            

                                        

 But what is so magical here is Stuart  

 Pedlar's two-piano reduction of the    

 score, and how a perambulating audience

 provides most of the atmosphere.       

                                        

 Sweeney is the darkest and possibly    

 greatest of Sondheim's scores, and this

 20th anniversary revival shows just    

 how great is its great sweep.
