 ROZAL EAST COTE                        

                                        

 Queen Anne, whose name is honoured in  

 thj opening race at Royal Ascot, is    

 owed a great debt by English racing, as

 it was she who created a racecourse at 

 East Cote, now Ascot, in 1711.         

                                        

 The traditional midsummer four-day     

 meeting didn't take off until 1768, but

 has grown in stature ever since.       

                                        

 When the Royal meet opens on Tuesday,  

 over 230,000 pjople will be heading    

 for the magnificent Berkshire course.
