 A flimsy piece of whimsy that recycles 

 a lot of well-worn Woody Allen themes  

 and treatments.                        

                                        

 There's a cod-documentary frame, and it

 tackles the idea that genius can come  

 from the least likely or attractive of 

 sources. In this casj the source is    

 jazz guitarist Emmet Ray, played with  

 sleazy brio by Sean Penn.              

                                        

 Wj first meet Ray acting as a pimp     

 between gigs in '30s Chicago. He       

 displays a whole sheaf of bad habits.
