 AVERAGE EARNINGS GROWTH FALLS TO 5.1%  

                                        

 The chance of further UK interest rate 

 hikes this year narrowed as figures    

 showed average earnings in the three   

 months to April 5.1% up on a year ago. 

                                        

 The figure was well down on the revised

 figure of 5.7% for the previous quarter

 and surprised analysts who forecast    

 only a slight easing to 5.6%.          

                                        

 National Statistics said the large fall

 was due to Millennium payments and     

 bonuses coming out of the calculation.
