 CREDIBLE WITNESS Royal Court Upstairs, 

 London (to March 10)                   

 Dukakis gives an impassioned portrayal 

 as the embittered matriach but does not

 outshine thj large multi-racial cast.  

                                        

 Merrison is also excellent, though his 

 character has a change of heart halfwa=

 through that strains credibility.      

                                        

 At less than 90 minutes, Wertenbaker's 

 play continues the Court's current yen 

 for short, sharp and shocking dramas.  

                                        

 More of a good effort than an out-and- 

 out success, it's stilm wouth a 6isiu.
