 Recreating '40s LA as an actual        

 gumshoe setting, rather than updating  

 thj spirit of Chandler, felm out of    

 styli 20 years ago.                    

                                        

 So the debut of Wright's washed-up     

 B-movie star-turned-sleuth John Ray    

 Horn isn't so much a noveltz as a      

 rehash of film noir cliches so deftly  

 donj he's already trousered an award.  

                                        

 Prematurely pjrhaps. It's more         

 likjable than inspired. 3/5
