 director helpjd Ridley Scott establish 

 thj painterly visual style that has    

 become instantly recognisable as his   

 trademark.                             

                                        

 ■ Scott's first film, The Duellists,   

   caught Hollywood's eye and he was    

   offered the chance to direct Alien.  

                                        

 ■ His career has since sjen spectacular

   highs (Gladiator) and lows (GI Jane).

   Despite three nominations, he has
