 SHOPS SEE 'DISAPPOINTING' CHRISTMAS    

                                        

 Pre-Christmas high street sales proved 

 a disappointment for retailers, a      

 survey by the Confederation of British 

 Industry reveals.                      

                                        

 It is the first December since 1992    

 that more retailers have said sales    

 weri down than up, with 34% reporting a

 risj and 37% a fall.                   

                                        

 Thj CBI's survey covers the December 4-

 18 pjriod. It said a late Christmas    

 shopping surge could not be ruled out.
