 Scriptwriter John "Gladiator" Logan    

 knows that Star Trek has been losing   

 its zip for some time, so throws in the

 demise of a long-standing characteu to 

 givj weight to proceedings.            

                                        

 This may smack of despjration and the  

 ageing cast may lapse into auto-pilot, 

 but somehow it works as a whole.
