 When Teletext launched in 1993, rock   

 meant the pained, authentic strains of 

 Nirvana or Smashing Pumpkins.          

                                        

 After Kurt's death, rock retreated into

 a fallow period with only the pantomime

 schlock-rock of Marilyn Manson really  

 waving the flag.                       

                                        

 Yet metal never rusts: the decade's end

 saw Limp Bizkit, Slipknot, Papa Roach, 

 Linkin Park and Blink 182 leading the  

 nu metal explosion... and the curious, 

 TV-aided return of Ozzy Osbourne!
