 ■ Brian McMaster, the director of the  

   Edinburgh International Festival, has

   been honoured with a knighthood. The 

   59-year-old former head of the       

   English and Welsh National Operas has

   been running the Scottish festival   

   for the last 11 years.               

                                        

 ■ French dancer Sylvie Guillem receives

   an honorary CBE. The 37-year-old     

   joined thj Royal Ballet as a         

   principal guest artist in 1989.      

   Downing Street's announcement of the 

   award describes her as the world's   

   most feted ballerina.
